This month, FPPE students swapped the lecture hall for a company right on the doorstep of SLA Software Logistik Artland, based right here in Quakenbrück.
If you’ve ever wondered what happens to a food product after it’s been engineered, how it’s tracked, traced, scaled, and managed across an entire production chain, SLA is where that question gets answered. They’re an IT company built specifically for the food and gastronomy industry, working on everything from RFID and robotics integration to AI-driven traceability and digital production management. With over 80 employees and digital solutions running in more than 450 companies worldwide, SLA has quietly become one of the connective layers behind a lot of the food industry’s digital backbone, like slaughterhouse digitalization and supply chain traceability.
Our students, had a chance to see something the curriculum often gestures toward but is hard to grasp in theory: what “Industry 4.0” actually looks like on a screen, in a server room, in a meeting where someone is debugging a traceability system for a client halfway across the world. Process engineering doesn’t stop at the production line, it continues into the software that monitors it, the data that proves it’s safe, and the systems that connect a slaughterhouse in e.g. Lower Saxony to a logistics partner in another country entirely.
